Celtis occidentalis
Hackberries
Commonly called the western hackberry, it is a robust, fast-growing tree valued for its dense shade and hardiness. Its bark is distinctive, gray-green, smooth in young trees and becoming fissured and rough in maturity. Its deciduous, green, lanceolate leaves provide a beautiful texture, while in autumn they turn golden yellow. In spring and summer, the tree produces small, inconspicuous flowers followed by fleshy purple or black fruits, which attract wildlife. Celtis occidentalis can reach 15 to 20 meters in height, making it an excellent choice for urban areas, parks or large gardens. Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant and requires little watering. Prune the tree in late winter or early spring to remove dead or damaged branches and promote healthy growth. It is very cold-hardy and can withstand harsh winter temperatures.
