Dicentra spectabilis
Bleeding Heart
Known as “bleeding heart,” Dicentra spectabilis is an ornamental perennial valued for its heart-shaped flowers, which range from pink to white and appear in spring. Its arching stems, topped with finely cut leaves, create an elegant and airy silhouette. Water regularly, keeping the soil slightly moist, especially during blooming, but avoid excess moisture to prevent root rot. Apply a balanced fertilizer in spring to promote growth and flowering. Remove faded flowers to encourage new blooms, and trim dead stems at the end of the season to maintain a neat shape. Semi-hardy, Dicentra spectabilis benefits from mulching around the base in winter, especially in colder regions, to protect the roots from frost.
