Prunus domestica French Plum
European/French Plum
This fruit tree, with a rounded to slightly spreading habit, is valued for its generous production of European-type plums, medium to large in size, with purple to bluish-violet skin depending on ripeness. Its yellow to golden flesh is juicy, sweet, and slightly tangy, making it an excellent choice for fresh eating as well as cooking, jams, and drying into prunes. In spring, it produces an abundant display of highly ornamental white blossoms, which appear before or with the foliage and attract many pollinators, adding strong ornamental value to orchards and gardens. Its medium green foliage may develop yellow tones in autumn, providing additional seasonal interest. For optimal production, it is often recommended to plant another compatible European plum nearby to improve cross-pollination and increase yield, although some selections of Prunus domestica can be partially self-fertile. Varieties such as ‘Italian Prune’ or ‘Damson’ are good pollination partners.Maintenance consists of light pruning in late winter to maintain a strong structure, removing dead or diseased branches, and encouraging good air circulation. Regular watering during dry periods and mulching at the base help retain moisture and support healthy growth, especially during the first years of establishment.
