Clethra alnifolia ‘Hummingbird’
Hummingbird Summersweet
A dwarf variety of sweet pepper, especially prized for its fragrant flowers and compact habit. This shrub produces beautiful panicles of white flowers in summer that attract hummingbirds and bees, hence its name. Its glossy green foliage turns a golden hue in autumn, adding even more charm to this small shrub. Water regularly to keep the soil moist, especially during dry spells. Prune lightly after flowering to remove spent flowers and encourage compact growth. This variety is cold hardy and can tolerate fairly low winter temperatures. In winter, apply a layer of organic mulch (such as straw, wood chips or shredded leaves) around the base of the plant. This helps protect the roots from extreme cold and maintain moisture in the soil over the winter.
